General Information on Hostels in Paris

Unfortunately, some hostels in Paris are of a mediocre standard at best. The rooms can be cramped, the stairwells can be narrow, and many hostels are run-down. However, don't let this deter you from booking a hostel, as Paris offers some wonderful options.

Here are some things that you might want to consider before booking a hostel in Paris.

  1. Price - Hostels in Paris are among the most expensive in Europe. In a dorm room, a bed starts at €20 a night (normally in large dorm rooms), but a medium-sized dorm room will cost between €30 and €40 per night (6 to 10 beds). Please note that the city tax (€1.90 per night) is not included in the pricing of some hostels in Paris. As with all other major cities in Europe prices at the weekend tend to be 20% to 40% higher. Prices will also be higher throughout the holiday season.
  2. Location - Paris is a massive city so it's best to stay in a central location close to the top sights and nightlife. However, if you stay in a local district, you won't have any problems because the Paris metro system covers the entire city. The largest concentration of hostels can be found around the main train station, Gare du Nord.
  3. Amenities/Services - Every hostel in Paris has free Wi-Fi, and a few include breakfast in the price, but if you require more specialised services, do your research to pick the hostel that best matches your requirements.
  4. Staff - In Paris, the majority of hostels have excellent staff. They are usually very friendly and will give you superb recommendations for bars, restaurants, and clubs, among other things. However, my recommendation is to study reviews to ensure that the hostel you select has friendly and helpful employees, as rude or unhelpful staff might ruin your hostel experience.
  5. Check-in/Check-out times - Check-out time for most hostels in Paris is 12 noon. Check-in time for most hostels is between 2 pm and 4 pm. Please note that nearly every hostel in Paris offers Free Luggage storage before or after you check in or out.
  6. Curfews - Some hostels in Paris still have a curfew in place, normally 12 midnight. But more and more Paris hostels are getting rid of this outdated policy.
  7. Cleaning - Some hostels close from 12 noon to 4 pm for cleaning.
  8. Free breakfast - Only some hostels in Paris include breakfast in the price. If it is included in the price this saves you on the cost of breakfast. However, most hostels offer breakfast normally for a reasonable price.
  9. Kitchen - If the hostel you are staying at has a fully equipped kitchen, you can save money by cooking your own meals. Some hostels in Paris only have partially equipped kitchens and some have no guest kitchen.
  10. Age Restrictions - With most hostels in Paris, you have to be between 18 and 39 years old, but with some youth hostels, you have to be under 35 to stay in a dorm. However, if you want to stay in a private room, there are normally no age restrictions.
